Too Many Home Insurance Claims?
Those who we’ve earned the honor of providing insurance protection for will have heard this before. But, if your agent hasn’t explained the basic truth about homeowners insurance claims, then check out this story and video from FOX News in Indiana. These points are really no different for Tennessee or anywhere else.
Enduring the last five years of economic recession, coupled with the extremes in weather we’ve all seen on the news, many insurance carriers are tightening up their underwriting guidelines. Some carriers who have been severely battered financially by the last several years have stopped accepting new policy applicants with ANY claims history in the last 3-5 years. But, as a general rule, most home insurance carriers aren’t intimidated when you’ve had one weather claim in the last 3-5 years. They understand weather is out of everyone’s control. Some of the strongest carriers get a little nervous when you’ve had one weather and one non-weather claim (i.e. fire, water, theft, liability, etc) in the last 3-5 years. They’ll almost always flat out deny your application, forcing you to apply with a substandard carrier at higher rates or self insure, if you have much more than 1 wx & 1 non in the last 3-5 years. Oh, and please note, your odds of remaining with the same carrier or being accepted by a new carrier go way up when you package all your business (home, auto, life, umbrella, boat, motorcycle, RV, etc.) with the same one. Protect your insurability. Talk with your agent if you’re ever in doubt about your coverage or what your best action should be involving claims.
So, call us or come by if you ever have questions about your homeowners insurance or what to do, who to call or where to look for help if you think you should file a claim. If you haven’t had a policy review in the last four years, bring it in for a complimentary analysis. We’ll do our best to help you get more than you’re already paying for.
