The unthinkable “What If’s” of Insurance
Let’s face it. None of us buy insurance because we have some burning desire inside us to do so. Those who do (and 24% of Tennessee motorists don’t), do it for reasons such as:
- It’s required by some higher authority (a lienholder we still owe, state law enforcement, even our parents)
- We want our vehicle repaired if we’re ever in an accident
- We want protection from the financial consequences and hardship that will come following an accident
- Some even do it out of some sense of responsibility to family and citizenship to others in the community (more rare with each passing year)
Seriously? Come on! We’re all careful behind the wheel. We’ll never be the cause of an accident. Why should we give our hard earned money to some “Fat Cat” insurance company somewhere, for some policy we’ll never use? Why? Because they’re called “Accidents”. Realistically, if we could truly maintain total control over all things, all of the time, we’d have to change the term to Intentionals. And, most assuredly, you’ll never have to buy insurance for Intentionals. You may, however, need strong legal representation.
Every year, as the temperatures outside warm and summer approaches, we hear far too often of motorcyclist perishing in collisions with larger vehicles on our roadways. Sometimes the motorcyclist was inexperienced or reckless and may have been at fault. But, far more often, the cause was the motorist who “just didn’t see the motorcyclist”. To those who will ponder, we ask:
- What if the AT FAULT motorist had procured the highest liability limits available on their auto policy and further strengthened their protection with a Liability Umbrella policy?
- What if the AT FAULT motorist had only procured their insurance for sake of a lower premium without regard to the protection they were forfeiting?
- What if the motorcyclist had procured the highest limits for Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist limits available on their motorcycle policy and further strengthened their protection with Uninsured/Under-insured Motorist coverage on an Umbrella policy?
- What if the motorcyclist had only procured minimal insurance for sake of a lower premium without regard to the protection they were forfeiting?
- What if the motorcyclist had recognized the increased peril involved with riding, and had procured an appropriate amount of Life Insurance to ensure their family would be provided for in the event of their fatality?
- What if the motorcyclist ignored the increased peril involved with riding, and hadn’t procured Life Insurance to ensure their family would be protected in the event of their death?
There’s just no pretty way to portray the experiences that result from a vehicular collision. It’s too often, impossible. Seeming and sadly, a life may have been lost in scenarios 1, 3 and 5 above. Sadly, the lives of many more were lost or drastically altered in scenarios 2, 4 and 6. With the national average for vehicular liability settlements exceeding $500,000 and $1,000,000 in 15% of these cases, why would you jeopardize yours, your family’s or the victim family’s future, for what amounts to only a few bucks a month? Be protected, not surprised. Get more than you’re already paying for.
