We were surprised last week to receive a “Request to Cancel” from one of our auto insurance policy clients of two years. They’d always owned an older vehicle and carried Liability, Med Pay and Uninsured Motorist limits of 250/500. Nevertheless, they were one of our earlier clients and part of our client family. Their choice to leave our agency hinged solely on a lower premium they’d found online. Initially, we were disappointed to receive their request until we reviewed their claims history over the two prior years they were clients. We found:
1-Roadside claim of $57 for a key they’d broken off in their ignition
1-Uninsured Motorist Property Damage claim after a hit and run driver damaged their car (the $466 which was paid for repairs to their car, was pocketed instead)
1-Medical Payment claim after they hit a patch of ice and ran off the road into an embankment. Chiropractor bills (where they worked) for some neck soreness came to $2,347.
At this point, they’d already received more than 2x their total of two years premiums paid back in claims. What we then discovered, was that they’d had an AT FAULT collision with another vehicle just two days prior to cancelling our policy (liability loss paid $2087). We were even more surprised to learn from their new carrier, that they’d accepted that lower premium for lower limits of 50/100 rather than the 250/500 we’d always provided. With an incident history like this, what are your thoughts? Good decision or not so good? We just hope their choice to ride on 80% less coverage for a few dollars less in monthly premium, doesn’t come back to bite them in the wallet later.

STOP and think about this possibility for a moment: You just died. Your family called and is on their way to see me. What would you like me to tell them?
Few folks take a serious look at life 10 or 20 years into the future, much less, at their final day. I mean, who really has that kind of time or foresight, right? But, if you suddenly died today, how would your family go on without you? How would they meet the day to day expenses like rent, little league, utilities, clothes, school activities, auto expenses, movies, groceries, Prom? Did you see where CNN, Forbes, Wall Street Journal and USA Today estimate the costs associated with raising a child to age 18 at around $250,000? Let’s not forget the expenses that come after age 18! How will your child obtain the college education of their dreams? Have you already set aside funds for all these costs, should you died this very day? Probably not. Well, a 20 or 30 year Level Term Life insurance policy can put your mind at ease and provide for your family’s financial essentials after you breathe your last, with PREFERRED rates starting at around $40/month for $1M in coverage. Do not risk or leave your family to the benevolence of others or prayer of another Go Fund Me account. Do the right thing and come see us.
You just died. Your family called and is on their way to see me. Let’s have a little peace of mind to offer them and continue the life you always intended to provide them. Be protected, not disappointed. Get more than you’re already paying for!
We’re frequently called upon to advise (and console) our parent clients who reluctantly come to know, all too quickly, about the suffering that accompanies adding a Teen Driver to their auto insurance policy. If you haven’t experienced this yet, the premium usually doubles and then some. The reasons are quite simple. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) reports:
- Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds
- Drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 are four times more likely to crash
- While making up only 10% of the driving population, teen drivers account for more than 12% of all traffic fatalities each year
These statistics worsen 3 fold when alcohol comes into the picture. Don’t think your teen drinks? We pray not. But, don’t be completely naive. Remember a little thing called “Peer Pressure”?
Traffic safety begins at home with teaching young drivers that having a license is a “Privilege” not a “Right”. Did you know Tennessee is a “Graduated Licensing” state? This Program is a multi-tiered program designed to ease young novice drivers into full driving privileges as they become more mature and develop their driving skills. By requiring more supervised practice, the State of Tennessee hopes to save lives and prevent tragic injuries. If you don’t find your teen is maturing as a safe driver under your supervision, nothing prohibits you from keeping them restricted to Permit privileges only. Might as well save that premium increase and perhaps you’ll help them avoid becoming another tragic statistic.
While the Graduated Licensing law is real, we want to emphasize the impact of parental influence or “Monkey see, Monkey do” vs. “Do as I say, not as I do”. Your child has been riding with you for a little more than a decade and a half. Which do you think they’re going to remember; what they’ve seen you do or what they’ve heard you say? That’s right! If you’re texting while driving, talking on the cell while driving, driving over the posted limit, neglecting to buckle up, following too closely, raging behind the wheel, blowing through school zones, drinking while driving, rolling through stop signs & lights, etc., your teen will likely do many of the very same things when they get into that driver’s seat.
So, our point here is, don’t drive perilously and you might just reduce the odds of your teen doing the same or worse, becoming among the aforementioned statistics. Regardless of what you decide, secure the highest limits of Liability, Uninsured Motorist and Umbrella coverage you can. Yes, the premiums will be painful for a while and we pray you never have to use the coverage. But, chances are, you just might. Please call or come by if we can help you be protected, not surprised and/or get more than you’re already paying for.
